Frequently asked questions about E.M.H. radiant heaters

Are E.M.H. wall mounted radiant heaters energy efficient?

Yes, E.M.H. wall mounted radiant are highly energy efficient. Radiant heat only needs an average of 50 Watts per square meter floor space compared to a minimum of 120 Watts of other heaters.

What are the running costs of E.M.H. wall mounted radiant heaters?

The running cost of any heater depends on various factors. The main cost factor is obviously the size of the room, but it is as well influenced by the amount of sunshine into the room, the insulation, the windows and the total design of the house. A well insulated home with lots of sunshine and a great amount of thermal mass needs a fraction of a poorly insulated, south facing home with single glazed windows. Based on your plans we are happy to work out a full proposal including the running costs for your home or office that will provide a cost effective and efficient heating solution using our E.M.H. radiant heaters.

Where can I see E.M.H. radiant heaters and feel the gentle heat?

E.M.H. has own showrooms in Dunedin and Nelson where a variety of wall mounted radiant heaters as well as an ergonomic heated footrest are on display and on sale there. Please make arrangements to visit the showrooms by phoning 0508 MARBLE (0508 627253).
In Nelson there is an additional exhibition of these heaters at the Home Energy Centre at 146 Pascoe Street. The Home Energy Centre is open Mo – Fr fro 8 to 4:30.
For the Auckland region there is a beautiful energy efficient marble heater on display at Mico Plumbing, 3 Tawa Street, Albany.

What is the lifespan of E.M.H. radiant heaters?

E.M.H. radiant heaters have been produced for more than 20 years and most of the first generation heaters are still in use. As there are no moving parts on those heaters the lifespan may be well above 25 years.

What maintenance has to be done with E.M.H. radiant heaters and what does that cost?

Radiant heaters from E.M.H. don’t need any maintenance. They do not have any moving parts nor filters or chimneys to clean. So there is no maintenance and therefore no cost involved.

Are the radiant heaters from E.M.H. difficult to install and what does it cost to install?

E.M.H. radiant heaters are very easy to install. They don’t need outside units, drains or flues. They can easily be wired from an existing power point so that the installation costs of these wall mounted heaters is usually around NZ$ 300.00 per unit.

Are all radiant heaters equally efficient?

No, there is quite a difference between the different types of radiant heaters.
E.M.H. radiant marble heaters for example take about 45 minutes to fully heat up. Due to the thermal mass of the marble or granite they retain the heat for about 90 minutes before they finally cool down. Therefore they don’t need to be reheated so often during the active time. The net running time is normally around 50%.
Kosywarm heaters don’t have the thermal mass to heat up. They are therefore much more instant and start radiating after 8 to 10 minutes. But they can’t retain the heat and therefore cool down much faster.
That’s why E.M.H. recommends the marble heaters for areas or offices where people spend more time in or where the heat is not lost fast due to lack of insulation, single glazed windows or similar circumstances. Kosywarm heaters are recommended for rooms where a more instant heat is needed for a shorter time period.
It is true that radiant heaters are all 100% efficient, however there are huge differences in the way you should use them and in performance.

Where are E.M.H. radiant heaters made?

E.M.H. radiant heaters are designed in Europe. The marble heaters are still made in various places in Europe, as close as possible to the quarries to avoid expensive transport. Kosywarm heaters are assembled in Nelson New Zealand, using imported heating elements only with locally made timber frames and locally supplied glass. This not only avoids transport costs, it also supports local suppliers in New Zealand.

I am suffering from allergies. Can I use E.M.H. radiant heaters?

Sure you can. Compared to other heaters, E.M.H radiant heaters produce very little air movement. Radiant heaters work with infrared rays, the same as sunrays. Infrared rays heat solid objects in the room, which then slowly and gently release the heat into the room. As there is so little air movement, there is no dust swirled up. E.M.H. radiant heaters therefore are ideal for allergy sufferers.

Why do E.M.H. radiant heaters need so little energy input compared to a heat pump?

Heat pumps heat the room by blowing hot or warm. This airflow causes a chill factor, which needs to be compensated by a higher energy output. E.M.H. radiant heaters produce very little air movement compared to other heating systems. Radiant heaters work on the principle of sunrays, infrared rays. Instead of heating the air directly, radiant heaters warm up solid objects in the room, including the human body. Being out in the sun makes people feeling warmer; the felt temperature is much higher than the real temperature. Therefore people usually want to have the room temperature 2 – 3 degrees lower than with any other kind of heating.
